There is no battery in an automatic. A weighted rotor winds the mainspring from the motion of his wrist, which works beautifully while it is on him and not at all while it is in a drawer. Leave one for two days and it stops — and the date is wrong before the time is. A winder turns the watch slowly while he isn't wearing it, so the one he picks up on Thursday is still running, and still right.

Most winders are tethered to a plug, and the plug decides where they sit — usually a shelf in a spare room. This one holds a rechargeable cell as well as taking a lead, so it can stand on the dresser where he actually gets dressed. A ring of light runs round the inside of the dome in one of two colours. It does nothing mechanical. It just means the thing reads as an object rather than an appliance.
